Latest guest book entry

The latest entry in our guest book reads:

“Town, weather, Cumbria, apartment (and location) perfect. Long may it last!”

Our guests were with us for two weeks so we’re doubly delighted that they had such a wonderful time.

Kendal mint cake – see it being made

Mention ‘Kendal’ to anyone outside of the area and they’ll invariably say ‘mint cake‘ back at you.  It’s rather like telling people overseas that you’re from ‘Manchester’ and them immediately responding with ‘Manchester United’. Anyway, I had the pleasure of seeing inside one of Kendal’s mint cake factories this morning.  If you’d like to see photographs of this fascinating product being made, then you can see the pictures I took on the Kendal mint cake Facebook fan page. Thanks go to Quiggins for being so accommodating with our visit.

The accompany picture is a photograph taken from Green Park Underground station.  The Virgin Trains poster reads:

“Inspiring getaways are closer than you think. You don’t have to take to the skies to see one of Europe’s most spectacular outdoor festivals. It’s happening in Cumbria. London to Oxenholme, the Lake District, in only 2 hours 38 minutes. For your free Prime guide to the best of England’s Northwest call 0845 600 6040 or go to www.primenorthwest.co.uk

Lakes Alive Various Cumbria Venues
May-Sept 2010″

So, there you have it.  Avoid the chaos of cancelled flights and holiday at home.  For those who don’t know, our apartment is just 3 miles from Oxenholme, the Lake District.  You can take a taxi from there, or just change trains on to the Windermere branch line and get off at Kendal station which is within easy walking distance. It couldn’t be easier.

New venture for the owners of The Punchbowl at Crosthwaite

The Punchbowl Inn and Restaurant is a fantastic little pub just outside Kendal that picked up a prestigious 2010 César Award. It was lauded for its “special touches,” “unfailingly helpful, good-humoured, mostly local staff” and “old-fashioned (in the best sense) ethos,” are praised by visitors.  The owners are also planning on a new venture this Summer, developing the Plough Inn and Restaurant near Kirkby Lonsdale which is also within easy reach of Kendal, so keep an eye out for that one too!

Fine dining in Cumbria and the Lake District

Whilst Cumbria is one of England’s largest counties in terms of land mass, it is also one of the least populated. Yet a league table of the counties in England with the most Michelin-starred restaurants – puts the Lake District in the top 5 in the country. The Samling at Windermere successfully won back its Michelin star in 2010 to join perennial winners Holbeck Ghyll, also in Windermere; Sharrow Bay at Ullswater; and L’Enclume in Cartmel. Two Lake District restaurants also make it into the Good Food Guide’s prestigious Top 50 Best Restaurants in the UK – L’Enclume at #13 and Holbeck Ghyll at #23.
