A brief sighting of a bittern

0

We went to the nearby RSBP reserve of Leighton Moss yesterday and were fortunate enough to see one of Britain’s rarest birds, the bittern. In 1997, the number of male bitterns in the UK stood at just eleven. Thankfully, with conservation efforts made with their habitat (they like reed beds), numbers have now grown to an estimated 85 ‘booming’ males in the UK (the boom being the bittern’s unusual mating call).  My apologies for the rather grainy picture.  It was a pity I didn’t manage to capture something a little better, particularly since it’s very unusual for the bittern to be a) seen clearly on the ground, or b) for it to emerge from the reeds.  Here, for a very brief moment, we had both before it took to the sky and flew away.

Birdwatchers considering using Kendal as a base for a holiday or short break may also be interested to know that we are quite near Haweswater, the site of England’s last remaining golden eagle.

3rd February 2011 – Morag Leiper “Pictures of Hope – A Community with Aids”

10th February 2011 – Lhakpa Sherpa “The Sherpas of Nepal”

17th February 2011 – Martin Holroyd “Discovering the World’s Largest Cave passage?”

24th February 2011 – Bill Birkett “Walk Ambleside, Rydal and Grasmere”

3rd March 2011 – John Weinstock “Sea Kayaking with Icebergs : East Coast of Greenland”

10th March 2011 – Jane Yates “Highs and Lows: Worldwide Trekking and Travelling with Young Children”

17th March 2011 – Bill & Dave Birkett “The Birkett Dynasty”

24th March 2011 – Stuart McAleese “Big Wall Baffin Island”

Slide & supper evenings usually cover a wide range of subjects mostly with an outdoor theme appealing to the outdoor activist and armchair enthusiast.
Tickets cost £7.15 for the evening. Booking is recommended, and tickets must be paid for at the time of booking.

The evenings start promptly at 7.30pm with the slide show followed by a light supper such as lasagne, cottage pie etc. – always with a veggie option. You may bring your own alcoholic drinks, but tea and coffee will be served with the meal and Wilf’s usual cakes are available to buy!

This year Valentines Day falls on a Monday, and you can enjoy a special Valentines break at our apartment from Friday 11th to Monday 14th February, or from Monday 14th to Friday 18th February, for just £450. But beware… these dates also co-incide with February half term dates for England, Scotland and Wales, so demand will be high.  Plan your Valentines break now to avoid disappointment!

World Heritage status for the Lake District?

Last year the Lake District was confirmed as one of this country’s 38 contenders for Word Heritage status, and culture ministers now have the task of reducing this to a shortlist of 10 locations for submission to UNESCO. The area is thought to be ahead of most all its rivals because its submission has already been completed, and it is anticipated that the shortlist will be announced in the spring. If successful, the Lake District will enjoy the same status as the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Booths – our ‘local’ supermarket

We receive numerous favourable comments from our guests about Booths.  If you don’t live in north-west England, you’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of them.  They’re a small, local chain of supermarkets predominantly based in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire, but also with one store in Cheshire (Knutsford).  Booths is a little pricier than some of the big supermarkets but puts the emphasis on quality.  The chain has partnered with Slow Food UK and has received numerous industry awards for its cheeses, real ale and wine. The Grocer magazine even named it as one of the world’s greatest food retailers.  In November of last year, they launched a TV ad campaign and you can enjoy one of those ads below to get a little more of a feel.

The Kendal branch of Booths is within easy walking distance of our riverside apartment, so it’s easy to stock up on provisions as soon as you arrive.

With thousands of people waiting for a reading, Sally worked out that it would take her 20 years to get through them all. Sally’s tour enables her to share her gift with hundreds of people at one time and she tours up and down the country playing to packed theatres. Her shows are unpredictable and full of amazing “wonder moments” as Sally likes to call them.

The Gruffalo said that no Gruffalo should ever set foot in the deep dark wood…

One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s child ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he?

JIMMY CARR ‘LAUGHTER THERAPY’
Thursday 26th May 2011 – 8.00pm

Since the turn of the century Jimmy has been a ‘fun slinger’ of international repute. ‘Laughter Therapy’ is his ninth solo show. It’ll be an evening of non-stop jokes, gags and banter. If you’ve got a sick sense of humour then maybe laughter is the best medicine. Not to be taken if you have a sensitive disposition or an overactive moral compass.

Recommended dose: one brand new show to be taken annually (I said annually). Tickets £25.00 each (not suitable for under 16s).
