Wildlife news from our riverside apartment

You could be forgiven for thinking that a town centre location might mean our accommodation is not well situated for spotting wildlife.  However, you’d be wrong!  Here are a few sightings recorded by residents over the last year or so which hopefully give you a flavour of what you might be lucky enough to spot if you keep your eyes peeled when staying with us:

February 2010: Otter tracks seen in the snow on the river bank.

June 2010: A dipper perched on one of the apartment balconies, and watched its reflection for a minute or so.

October 2010: One resident noted that he has now seen kingfishers a few times from his apartment.  He even saw two having a scrap!  The depth measuring equipment in the river seems to be a favoured perch.

October 2010: A resident reported watching a young otter for some time, investigating the riverbank and the holt in the base of the apartment building. It was aware that it was being watched, but didn’t seem too bothered!

November 2010: Waxwings were seen at the top of the trees opposite the apartment building. They flew back and forth for some time.

November 2010: Long tail tits seen since late November and even seen foraging on the apartment balconies.

December 2010: Single dabchick and gadwall seen together from the apartments, and two whooper swans. Hard weather had possibly displaced them to running water.

January 2011: Drake goldeneye recorded.

February 2011: Evidence of otter droppings seen close to the part remains of a salmon.
