The Lake District – a bird lover’s paradise

Two significant bird-related events have taken place in the Lake District, so I thought I’d given them a mention in case there are any ornithologists out there. Firstly, two osprey chicks born at Bassenthwaite have fledged. Ospreys returned to the site in Cumbria 10 years ago and you can watch them in flight from a special viewpoint at Dodd Wood, near Keswick, run by the Lake District Osprey Project.

And secondly, a second wave of red kites has been released at Grizedale. Thirty of the rare birds were released today, a year on from the first release; this all forms part of a 3-year re-introduction programme spearheaded by the Forestry Commission.

And closer to Kendal… let’s not also forget the RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve – one of only a few sites in the UK where you’ll get to see bittern – and the RSPB reserve at Haweswater which is home to England’s only golden eagle.

If you love birds, this really is a great location to come on holiday!
