Otter spotted from our balcony!

Last year I mentioned how otters are making a comeback in South Cumbria, and I’ve previously made reference to sightings by residents of the building where our riverside apartment is located.

Last week our guests kindly completed a feedback form advising us that they’d actually seen one from the balcony of our apartment.

They wrote: “Also an otter was spotted Wednesday night 7pm swimming above the river in front of the apartment. Was there for about 10 minutes swimming about.”

New exhibition at Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal

From today, the riverside setting of Abbot Hall Art Gallery, which forms part of the Lakeland Arts Trust, will make a fitting backdrop to an exhibition of work by seminal British artist Richard Long. The works on display form part of the ARTIST ROOMS collection, which is jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. Since the late 1960s Long has made work in the landscape. His practice of making walks in the natural world led him to be one of the most prominent and pioneering artists of his generation, extending art beyond the boundaries of the gallery. The artist records his walks, and the discreet sculptures he makes in the landscape through photography, maps and text pieces that together explore the geometry of the environment. He has also used organic materials such as slate, flint or sticks to make floor-based sculptures and frequently integrates mud into drawings and wall-works.

Long presented an exhibition at Abbot Hall in 1985. Twenty-six years later, this exhibition – which runs until 17th December 2011 – will offer visitors the possibility to explore the artist’s practice across his extensive career.
