Kendal Cricket Club – doing what’s right for Kendal

For those of you who aren’t aware, Kendal already has six supermarkets. A Booths, a Marks & Spencer’s and an Iceland in the town centre, and out-of-town supermarkets in the form of ADSA, ALDI and Morrisons (not to mention local butchers, greengrocers, farm shops, several Spars, a twice-weekly market and the occasional farmers’ market).

So we really don’t need a seventh – a proposed Sainsbury’s on the site of Kendal Cricket Club‘s cricket ground on Shap Road.  (If you really want a Sainsbury’s, there’s one about half an hour away anyway.)  Yet this is what has been proposed for some time, with the cricket club having to move elsewhere.  For some time, the club has made it clear that they don’t want to move but unfortunately the club don’t actually own the land on which it plays, but instead only has a lease on it that runs until 2026.

And thankfully, in their wisdom, the cricket club have just held an extraordinary general meeting and voted 64 to 1 against the newly proposed supermarket.  It’s good to know that the people of Kendal want to retain the green spaces we have.

So, good news all round… no more unnecessary supermarkets (for now, at least), no increased congestion around that particular site, and Kendal Cricket Club get to continue to play at the ground they’ve been at for more than a century.
