Fourth Wordsworth house in the Lake District

The National Trust is planning to open a fourth Wordsworth house in the Lake District: a Georgian villa called Allan Bank. ¬†Wordsworth actually wasn’t too fond of the property at first, having had problems with smoking chimneys and referring to it as a “temple of abomination”!

Allan Bank has a double significance to the National Trust as it was also home to Canon Hardwick Rawnsley who was one of the Trust’s co-founders. ¬†The house is currently an empty shell but events are being held this week to invite the public to have their say on how they think it should be shown.

In the meantime, you can visit the Wordsworth homes of Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, both in Grasmere, and his birthplace in Cockermouth.
