10 great reasons to choose Kendal as a base for your next Lake District holiday

Whether you’re a seasoned visitor or someone considering coming to Kendal for the first time, here are 10 reasons why the town is a great place to visit.

1. Kendal is easily accessible by road or rail but just a mile from the Lake District National Park.

2. Kendal is also within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

3. Kendal is very lucky to have an excellent events venue in the form of the Brewery Arts Centre.

4. Kendal has numerous good restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars.

5. Kendal is great for shopping with a good mix of local and High Street stores.

6. Kendal has more of a local, year-round feel than many of the more seasonal honeypot towns of the Lakes.

7. Kendal has lots of interesting attractions – Kendal Castle, Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal Museum, the Quaker Tapestry Museum, a 12th Century parish church and the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry.

8. Kendal is an excellent location for local produce, and has its own farmers market and several award-winning farm shops nearby.

9. Kendal is an ideal base for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, and even has its own ski slope and climbing wall.

10. The people of Kendal are friendly!

Another award for our apartment building

The building in which our apartment is situated has received another award. In addition to the 2010 LABC Northern Building Excellence Award for “Best Large Housing Development” which it picked up last year, and the Holiday Lettings 2011 Hall of Fame Award that our apartment picked up this year, the development has scooped a highly commended in the prestigious UK Property Awards.  The award was presented to Rusell Armer by the former BBC Royal correspondent, Jennie Bond, in a glittering gala ceremony held in London.  It is part of the International Residential Property Awards, the property industry’s most prestigious awards programme.

Fireworks over Kendal Castle

We ventured into town on Saturday evening to watch the firework display over Kendal Castle.  I’m not sure you get the best view by walking up to the castle itself.  In the past, we’ve watched from Queens Road, an elevated area on the north side of town, or from the Helm near Oxenholme.  This time I wanted to take some photos to show why our holiday apartment is such a great place to stay when there’s a display on, so we watched from Victoria Bridge on Sandes Avenue.

The picture shows our apartment with its own private riverside balcony on the left, with fireworks exploding over the castle and being reflected in both the river and the windows.  I hope it captures how staying in our accommodation gives you one of the best views in town!

Weather permitting, firework displays usually take place at Kendal Castle on Bonfire Night and at New Year. They are kindly put on by Kendal Round Table, with the support of Kendal Town Council and local businesses.

At the moment, we do still have availability for this New Year (though enquiries have really started to pour in this last week so I can’t imagine we’ll have the vacancy for much longer).

Friday 30th December 2011 – Monday 2nd January 2012 – £690

…or stay the full week for just £100 more. (Friday 30th Dec 2011 – Friday 6th Jan – £790).  Some of November 2012 is already booked, but there is currently availability for the pertinent dates – Monday 5th – Friday 9th November 2012 – which is priced at £370.
